The Bus Has Been Saved; TransLink announces 5% service increase starting in September
April 10, 2025
TransLink has posted the details of its 2025 Investment Plan, which confirms that the province and the Mayors’ Council have come to an agreement to ensure there are no cuts to bus service between now and 2027. There will be a 5% increase in bus service, which will start being implemented in September of this year.
Movement is reviewing the documentation, and will have more detailed quotes and a full press release soon.
We are grateful to Minister Farnworth, Parliamentary Secretary Anderson, and Mayor West for making the tough decisions necessary to prevent cuts and begin to address the desperate shortage of transit in the fastest growing parts of our region, like Surrey.
They’ve been hearing from their constituents about how essential transit is to affordability and job access, and so they know that their hard work will go a long way. But they will also know that 5% (or 1.7% per year) is not enough to conclude the conversation about funding. If we want to reduce congestion and improve affordability, we need something closer to 10% service increases per year, so let’s all work together to figure out how that level of relief can be provided to Metro Vancouverites.
In the context of an impending recession, people are going to need an affordable way to get around more than ever, and they’ll need good, local jobs. Transit provides both.
We’re planning a party to celebrate and thank the people behind the new funding. Stay tuned.
