The proposed extension of bus lane hours in Marpole is facing backlash from a handful of naysayers. The city needs to hear from supporters like you!

Keep Marpole Moving!

Good news for the 17,800 transit riders who take the 10 and 100 every weekday: the planned increase in bus lanes hours on Granville will help shorten your commute. This means less time stuck in traffic and more time doing the things you love!

Bad news: opponents to this plan are trying to block it out of fear of removing a few street parking spots during peak rush hour, despite plentiful parking lots in the area, and despite the fact that Marpole residents are much more likely to commute by transit than the average Vancouverite. The 10 is the 12th slowest bus in the entire region (out of 230+ bus routes). Bus lanes would increase access for Marpole residents, not worsen it.

Diagram of the proposed changes in Marpole.
Summary of changes:
  1. Four new hours of bus lane on Granville southbound between 63rd and SW Marine
  2. Four and a half new hours of bus lane on Granville northbound between 63rd and 70th
  3. 24/7 bus lanes on Granville northbound south of 70th
  4. 24/7 bus lanes on Granville north of 63rd

We love faster commutes and buses that show up when they’re supposed to!

There wouldn’t even be any disruptive construction – they just need to change a few signs. These bus priority improvements mean commuters in Marpole and beyond can rely on their bus to actually show up on time, and then skip traffic to get where they’re going faster. When buses are delayed here they affect everyone who takes them, even if they’re over in Burnaby or downtown. And when transit is improved, more people will take it, freeing up space for those who need to drive. It’s a win-win for everyone.

City Council approved these changes almost a year ago, but this plan is at risk of being overturned at the last minute. In order to keep Marpole moving, send your story of how faster, more reliable buses would benefit you. If you live in Vancouver and especially in Marpole, be sure to mention it.

City Council and staff rarely hear positive feedback from their constituents, and right now they’re only hearing from opponents. They need to hear from transit riders and supporters like you. Your voice matters!

This isn’t even all the city and TransLink have planned for Granville. We’re supporting the bus priority measures that have been proposed from 5th Ave all the way to Marine Drive. In the most congested part, north of 16th Ave we’re encouraging the city to go even further with bus priority, especially because it will become a major transit hub with the new SkyTrain incoming. Check out our full write-up on all the great ways it will improve and how you can support.
